September 2022 Film Club Pick
It’s that time of year again! If there’s one thing you’ve probably learned about us over the past few years, it’s that we love autumn. There’s nothing like the cool fall weather and the gorgeous fall foliage (we are both especially lucky to enjoy the New England leaves). There’s also nothing like curling up with a blanket and a nice warm beverage and settling down to watch a fall-themed movie. And this autumn, we feel a particular need to de-stress and embrace the beauty of the season. There are so many pleasant autumn films to choose from, and this September we’ve chosen to celebrate the seasonal change with a feel-good fall romcom: You’ve Got Mail (1998, dir. Nora Ephron). (We know, we're stretching the 'autumnalness' a bit, but anyone can send us bouquets of pencils any day…)
Starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan (in their third on-screen pairing, post-Joe Versus the Volcano, 1990, and Sleepless in Seattle, 1993, but pre-Ithaca, 2015), You’ve Got Mail finds two people at odds in the real world falling in love in the virtual world, unbeknownst to them. It’s a true ‘90s nostalgia trip, featuring AOL email, instant messenger, and chat rooms. It’s also chock-full of that New York fall aesthetic (plus all the other seasons too) that’s guaranteed to give you a nice, cozy fall feeling. So, start the fall off right, and catch up with You’ve Got Mail (the movie is currently streaming on Hulu and can be rented on Amazon Prime), and meet back here at the end of the month for a discussion of the film.
