July & August 2022 Film Club Picks
There are so many different sayings and quotes about time, from ‘time waits for no one’ to ‘time flies when you are having fun,’ but there is one saying that really spoke to me recently. I saw a sticker the other day (yes, I am one of those millennials that has an obscene collection of stickers), which said, “Time is a weird soup,” and I don’t think I have seen such truer words in quite some time. I, of course, am sitting here and pondering where the time has gone this month, recognizing that we, the distractible team at The Film Rewind, have yet to announce our monthly Film Club selection, and it is now the 31st of July… I believe it was Oscar Wilde who once said, “Punctuality is the thief of time.” While we might not be quite so punctual with our announcement of our selection this month, we will gladly get a jump start on next month!
Our July Film Club pick is Mrs. Miniver (1943, dir. William Wyler), which was widely released on July 22, 1942, and celebrates its 80th anniversary this year. The film is a war-time drama and romance, starring Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon. If you haven’t heard of the film before, we highly recommend that you revisit it with us, as it just happens to be the highest grossing film of 1942 and won six Academy Awards, including Best Picture. If that wasn’t reason enough to screen this film, it also just happens to have a sequel, The Miniver Story (1950, dir. H. C. Potter), which reunited Garson and Pidgeon in their original roles. (What can I say, we do love an excuse to rewatch classic Hollywood cinema films and their sequels…)
If you’re thinking, ‘wait, no summer themed selection?’ have no fear, because we think our August Film Club Pick will peak just about anyone’s fancy. We are very excited to announce that our August selection is the modern music-and-dancing-filled romantic classic: Dirty Dancing (1987, dir. Emile Ardolino). Albeit another romantic drama, we cannot help but get excited to revisit this summer themed film, starring Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey. This now iconic film was widely released on August 21, 1987, and happens to celebrate its 35th anniversary next month. (We do enjoy our movie milestones!)
While summer might be close to winding down (although definitely not cooling down), we certainly hope that you will join us in revisiting our July and August Film Club selections: Mrs. Miniver and Dirty Dancing! Be sure to check back soon for our (‘slightly’) delayed reviews from previous months, and take some time to plan a movie night (or two) with friends and family. With that, I’ll leave you with a little wisdom from Steven Spielberg, who once stated, “Every time I go to a movie, it’s magic, no matter what the movie’s about.”
What do you think of our July and August selections? How excited are you to revisit these films? Share your thoughts in the comments below and check back soon for more posts!
