October, November, and December 2022 Film Club Picks
Where has the time gone? … It has been ages since we last posted. What can we say other than life has been complicated of late? Between working, home renovations, trips, taking classes, and the hectic rush of the holiday season, autumn has flown by, and the end of the year is fast approaching. Who knows, perhaps some Christmas miracle will help us get caught up with our rather belated reviews before we welcome in a new year? In the spirit of catching up, here are our Film Club selections for October, November, and December of 2022.
October:
While we never announced an October selection for Film Club, we couldn’t let the best month in the world pass by without a spooky film to review! For October, our Film Club pick serves a dual purpose: to (belatedly) celebrate the Halloween season, and also to honor the late, great Angela Lansbury, titan of theatre and both the big and small screen. While several Lansbury films would be appropriate for the Halloween season, we’ve decided to pay tribute to her with a review of the Disney musical, Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1972, dir. Robert Stevenson)!
Set during World War II, Lansbury plays an “apprentice witch” who reluctantly takes in three war orphans and ends up taking them on the adventure of a lifetime as she attempts to contribute to the war effort. If you’re a fan of Mary Poppins (1964, dir. Robert Stevenson), this film not only stars David Tomlinson (Mr. Banks himself), but also shares the same director and composers (Richard and Robert Sherman). We will be reviewing the extended version of the film, but the original theatrical version is streaming on Disney+ if it cannot be found elsewhere. So, throw in a bonus bit of witchiness this month and catch up with this magical, musical movie!
November:
Ah yes, Thanksgiving season. A time for turkey comas and traveling to visit relatives. Here at The Film Rewind we had to triple check that we had not reviewed our November Film Club pick before, as it seriously baffled us that this film was not one of our go-to picks over the last few years… And even though we are a week out from the holiday itself, we would be remiss if we did not celebrate that perennial Thanksgiving comedy classic Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987, dir. John Hughes).
The plot of this film presents itself as straight-forward; two men get stranded in Wichita, Kansas, after their flight from New York City to Chicago is diverted due to a blizzard, and must travel by any means necessary to get home in time for Thanksgiving. However, things certainly do not go according to plan for Neal Page, portrayed by Steve Martin, and Del Griffith, played by John Candy, as the two team up and become the unlikeliest of travel companions. Directed by John Hughes (in a slight departure from the teen angst comedies he is most well-known for) Planes, Trains and Automobiles is sure to tickle your funny bone and make you glad that we have survived yet another Thanksgiving holiday.
December:
Getting an ever-so-slight head start on the month of December, we are pleased to announce our December Film Club pick. While you might be expecting us to select a traditional holiday classic, we went in a slightly different direction once we realized that our choice would be celebrating a milestone this month. Having premiered on December 21, 1937, and celebrating its 85th anniversary, we are happy to announce that our December pick is the animated Disney classic, Snow While and the Seven Dwarfs (supervising dir. David Hand)!
Featuring iconic songs, unforgettable characters, and being the first feature length film that launched the enduring legacy of Walt Disney Productions, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is one of those seminal films that all people should experience at least once. No matter what kind of mood you are in, from ‘happy’ to ‘grumpy’ and emotions in between, we think that there is never a wrong time to rewatch this musical fantasy.
So, there you have it, our three Film Club picks for October, November, and December 2022. We hope that you will take some time to revisit these classics, or perhaps experience these films for the very first time. What better excuse is there to take a break from the hustle and bustle of your daily life and have a mini movie marathon? Pop some popcorn and snuggle up on your couch for what is sure to be an entertaining and family friendly watch party! Enjoy!
