November Film Club Pick
November is a strange month. It is that month that gets lost in the post-Halloween pre-Christmas mayhem. Nowadays people appear more interested in “black Friday” shopping than watching a parade, cooking a turkey, or spending time with family and friends. This got us thinking, here at The Film Rewind, about Thanksgiving themed films, but we were hard-pressed to come up with many films that solely focus on Thanksgiving…
That is why we have decided to select the 1995 film, Home for the Holidays, directed by Jodie Foster, as our November film club pick-of-the-month. Incidentally, Jodie Foster happens to have a November birthday (the 19th, to be exact), which just amps up the November vibes for us. Home for the Holidays is a family comedy-drama that focuses on single-mom Claudia (Holly Hunter) who ventures home to Baltimore to spend Thanksgiving with her family. The main dinner scene in this film is rumored to have used an obscene amount of food on the set, so if that doesn’t make you long for a good old-fashioned thanksgiving, with a traditional spread – i.e. the turkey, gravy, and all the trimmings – I don’t know what else will.
So, before you settle into your turkey coma, take some time to rent, borrow, or stream (as it is currently available on Hulu) our November film of the month, Home for the Holidays. Share your thoughts on our November selection in the comments below. Plus, don’t forget to check back in with the blog on the last Friday of the month for our reviews and reactions to this film. Happy viewing!
