May 2022 Film Club Pick
We know… We have been delayed in selecting our May Film Club Pick, again, but there were just so many good choices to consider, and so much going on this month, that our selection post just sort of got away from us. We guarantee that this will not become a bad habit… Speaking of habits, our May selection (cue the choir) is: Sister Act (1992, dir. Emile Ardolino)!
In case you were living under a rock for the last thirty years (or perhaps hiding away in a convent), Sister Act is a music-filled comedy film that was originally released on May 29, 1992, and just happens to be celebrating its 30th anniversary this month (we do love a good movie milestone). The film even got the sequel treatment, with Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit (1993, dir. Bill Duke), and full Broadway musical adaptation in a production that ran from 2011-2012 and received five Tony Award Nominations. The original film, however, includes a stellar cast, featuring the talents of Whoopi Goldberg, Maggie Smith, Bill Nunn, Mary Wickes, Kathy Najimy, Wendy Makkena, and Harvey Keitel (who, coincidently, celebrated his 83rd birthday this month on May 13; a win-win reason to select this film in our book). The movie’s narrative focuses on the tribulations of Deloris Wilson (Goldberg), a lounge singer, who is witness to her gangster boyfriend’s (Keitel) murder of an informant, which lands Deloris in witness protection… What could possibly be safer than a convent?
We hope that you will join us in watching Sister Act this month (which you can easily stream right now on Disney+), whether it is your first time, or hundredth, watching this film, as we could all use a laugh or two. Just be sure to scrounge up some snacks (but don’t let the Reverend Mother know), and feel free to sing along with the choir, as we revisit Sister Act!
