June Film Club Pick
Summer is almost here, but since we cannot really go to the beach anyway (what with social distancing and all), here is another reason not to go: Jaws (1975). This film, directed by Steven Spielberg, is considered one of the first summer ‘blockbuster’ films and has had such a major impact upon popular culture, film history, and our fascination with sharks. Based on the novel, “Jaws” by Peter Benchley, which was first published in 1974, the film adaptation of Jaws has captivated so many cinema-goers and is about to celebrate the 45th Anniversary of its theatrical release, on June 20th of this month. In our eyes, this makes for the perfect June Film Club Pick!
Between the iconic score by John Williams, picturesque views of Martha’s Vineyard, and plenty of suspenseful moments, Jaws is one of those films that every film student and cinephile should see at least once. We recommend making an event out of your screening: find the biggest screen or TV possible, gather your family, and procure a bounty of fish-themed snacks. At The Film Rewind, we are partial to Swedish Fish, Goldfish crackers, and buttered ‘Sea’ Salt popcorn with a dash of Old Bay seasoning, but there are plenty of ways to get creative, have fun, and make your own ‘beach’ themed viewing party.
Once you’ve hunted down a copy of the film (it is available as a digital rental on several different streaming services), and watched it for the first or hundredth time, we hope that you will join us at the end of the month for our reviews and discussion of all things Jaws. We could not be happier and more excited to kickoff the summer season with such an iconic beach-themed film! What are your thoughts on Jaws? How many times have you seen this film? How do you like to celebrate the start of summer? Share your thoughts in the comments below and make sure you stay out of the water… Happy viewing!
