As the old ditty goes, “It’s the MIBs..here come the MIBs… here come the Men in Black.” And indeed, here they do come.

For September, here at The Film Rewind, we move from one dynamic duo, with last month’s Film Club pick, to another. This time we celebrate two birthdays in one review, with the great Tommy Lee Jones turning 75 on September 15th and none other but Will Smith turning 53 (how?!?) on September 25th. How could we possibly resist the opportunity to review the beloved 1997 sci-fi comedy Men in Black, directed by Barry Sonnenfeld? This choice also allows us to say goodbye to the summer with a throwback blockbuster pick. So many birds, just one stone!

Join us this month as we watch this unlikely pairing of secret agents, Jones’ no-nonsense “Agent K,” and Smith’s charismatic “Agent J,” investigate some extra-terrestrial goings-on in New York City. With a supporting cast that includes Linda Fiorentino, Vincent D’Onofrio, and Rip Torn, this is sure to be an interesting adventure. Lest we forget: the movie was nominated for three Oscars and won the Academy Award for Best Makeup, plus the Visual Effects were considered particularly praiseworthy for their time. Will they (and the rest of the film) hold up some 14 years later? By the end of our journey, will we love this movie, or will we be glad we packed our neuralyzers?
