An Ode to the Apple
Tomorrow marks the first day of fall, but before you go full “pumpkin spice” everything, why not stop and celebrate that other autumnal favorite: the apple. There are so many ways to enjoy apple themed things this time of the year. From apple picking, to cider, apple crisps, crumbles, and pies, to caramel or candy apples, and even to that old party favorite, bobbing for apples, there are so many great ways to enjoy apples this season. Here are just a few of my favorite apple themed things:
Apple Slicer:
Hands down, one of my favorite kitchen gadgets. It cores and perfectly slices apples into 8 equal wedges. This makes it super easy to grab an apple and pair it with a tasty dip or topping. I’m currently partial to maple almond butter with my apple slices. However, you can’t go wrong with a generous sprinkling of cinnamon sugar. I couldn’t get through apple season without my apple slicer.
Cider? Yes, please!
I love apple cider, in all its glorious forms. There is nothing more satisfying on a warm autumn day than a nice chilled glass of sweetly-tart cider. There are also so many things you can do and make with it too, including mixing it into cocktails, mocktails, and even baked goods like apple cider doughnuts.
Apple Chips:
Need a quick snack on the go, but hate gnawing on a messy apple? Try apple chips! A crunchy treat where apple slices are baked or dehydrated resulting in thin, crispy apple pieces. Apple chips are great on their own, but they also make an excellent addition to your favorite trail mix.
Apples in Cinema:
Still not convinced that apples and fall go together like peanut butter and jelly, or gin and tonic, or Abbott and Costello? Take a moment to think about these iconic scenes that feature apples in cinema:
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) - The poisoned apple…
The Lady Eve (1941) - Barbara Stanywck drops an apple on Peter Fonda’s head. Also, the opening title sequence features an adorable animated snake and apples, very ‘Garden of Eden’-esque.
Private Buckaroo (1942) - Features the Andrews Sisters singing “Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree (With Anyone Else But Me).”
The Wizard of Oz (1939) - Apple throwing trees.
American Pie (1999) - “Warm apple pie.”
Melody Time (1948) - This Disney classic feature the delightful animated musical short film “The Legend of Johnny Appleseed.”
Harry Potter (Film Series, 2001-2011) - Apples show up all the time, especially Malfoy eating apples. It has basically become a trope for villains to eat a bite or two of an apple and throw it away.
Good Will Hunting (1997) - “Do you like apples?”
Whatever variety, however, sweet, juicy, or tart, be sure to take some time and enjoy apple season for all its worth this year. What are your favorite apple treats and/or snacks?
