October Film Club Pick

October Film Club Pick

October is a month that provides countless potential film club picks (for a list of some great horror film suggestions for this month, check out Sarah’s post from earlier this week), but for this month we didn’t even deliberate as to which film we would choose. Seriously, we didn’t discuss it at all. Sarah and I both knew in our heart of hearts what film it had to be.

Hocus Pocus, especially nowadays, is pretty much the quintessential Halloween family flick. This hilarious tale of the Sanderson sisters (Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker) has been a Halloween staple since its release in 1993. The past five or so years, wonderfully and inexplicably, have seen a massive resurgence of the movie’s popularity, with Halloween costumes, t-shirts, pillows, and other novelty products popping up in stores everywhere. Sure, we’ve been teased and let down time and time again with the prospect of a sequel for about a decade, but is a sequel really necessary? Why not just watch the original twice??

We’ve both seen the movie so many times every year. In fact, we can’t keep away from it, and it is that magnetism that we want to explore this year in Film Club. So pop in your personal copy, whether on Blu-Ray, DVD, or (horror of horrors) VHS, better yet, try to catch one (or more) of its thirty airings on Freeform, and join us on the last Friday of the month for a discussion of this endlessly quotable seasonal classic.

Grab your brooms, sniff out your children, and share your thoughts and anticipation in the comments below!

“SISTAHS!!” (Sorry, I couldn’t resist.) “Come, we fly!”
