May Film Club Pick

May Film Club Pick

May is here, which means that it is finally starting to feel like spring! We, here at The Film Rewind, debated a few different options for our selection this month, ultimately deciding to go with a ‘gardening’ theme in honor of all the budding plants that are popping up here and there in true fashion of the season. Given that we could all use a laugh right about now, Saving Grace (2000) fought its way to the top of our list, and we could not be more excited to revisit this outrageous comedy!

Released in the UK on May 19, 2000, Saving Grace is an entertaining film directed by Nigel Cole that celebrates the 20th anniversary of its theatrical release this month (gosh this makes us feel old!). The movie stars Brenda Blethyn as Grace, a middle-aged widow whose husband has left her with a massive amount of debt and on the verge of losing her house. Grace along with her gardener Matthew, played by the hilarious Craig Ferguson (who co-wrote the screenplay along with Mark Crowdy), concoct an audaciously half-baked plan to get Grace out of her financial troubles as quickly as possible… I will not go into any more details, especially for those of you who haven’t seen this film before, but just be prepared to laugh, and make sure to have plenty of snacks on hand.

Saving Grace is one of those rare genre blending comedies (which I am so obviously unbiased about… because I do love a good genre blending film) that celebrates friendship, gardening, and spectacular views of the English and Cornish countryside. If this film does not give you ‘spring’ vibes, we don’t know what will! If you do not happen to have a copy of the film on DVD (as I do), you can rent a copy of Saving Grace through various streaming services including Amazon Prime, Vudu, Google Play, YouTube, and iTunes, for a small fee. Once you have watched the film, be sure to join us for our discussion of all things spring, gardening, and Saving Grace around the last Friday of the month. Happy Viewing!

What do you think of our May film club pick? What is your favorite thing about spring? Do you wish that you had a bit more of a green thumb? Share your thoughts in the comments below, and don’t forget to track down a copy of Saving Grace!
