January 2021 Film Club: Double Feature!
2021 is shaping up to be just as intense as 2020 (we weren’t all hoping that some magical spell would be broken at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve… right!?!), and if the first couple weeks into the new year have shown us anything, it is that we need some distracting, uplifting, and comedy-filled entertainment to break up the doom and gloom that is pervasively around us right now. With that in mind, we (the Team at The Film Rewind) took some time in selecting our January Film Club Pick and ultimately landed on a double feature that we hope will remind you of simpler times, give you a laugh (or two), and help you forget your troubles, if just for the span of one evening.
Without further ado, our January Film Club Picks are: Three Men and a Baby (1987) and The Men and a Little Lady (1990)! What can we say? We like sticking with a theme, especially where one of the leads in both films, Tom Selleck, will celebrate his 76th Birthday this month (on January 29th). This makes our double feature theme a total win-win, don’t you think?
In case you didn’t already know, Three Men and a Baby is an American remake (directed by Leonard Nimoy… yes, the original Spock from Star Trek) of a 1985 French film, Trois hommes et un couffin (aka Three Men and a Cradle), which went on to inspire a bunch of international remakes and sequels. We are going to focus on the 1987 remake, which follows the antics of three bachelors, who share an apartment in New York City, and get a surprise “package” left on their doorstep that completely upends their lives. Three Men and a Baby stars Tom Selleck, Steve Guttenberg, and Ted Danson as the unsuspecting recipients of a new bundle of joy, but the film quickly morphs into an intense thriller of sorts when the leading trio get swept up in a rather messy drug deal… The sequel, Three Men and a Little Lady, is directed by Emile Ardolino, who is best known for directing Dirty Dancing (1987), Sister Act (1992), and The Nutcracker (1993), but reunites the three leads from the original film, as they grapple with their roles as ‘fathers,’ managing their personal lives, and raising their growing daughter, Mary.
Even though we tend not to be the biggest fans of remakes or sequels (as they are rarely up to par with their predecessors) we are excited to make an exception by revisiting both Three Men and a Baby and Three Men and a Little Lady this month. Both films are currently available to stream on Disney+, so get that popcorn popping, and make plans to settle into your couch for a fun-filled double feature. What do you think of our January Film Club Picks? Have you seen either of these films before? Share your thoughts in the comments below and stay tuned for more distraction-filled posts!
