October 2021 Film Club Pick

It is officially ‘Spooky Season!’ and I don’t know about you, but I am so ready for all the things that come with this time of year. Such as, the pumpkin carving, autumnal decorations, and, of course, all the horror and Halloween-themed films that I can cram into a measly 31 days… That being said, we, the team at The Film Rewind, had the ever important and seemingly impossible task of narrowing down our film club selection for this month. There were just too many amazingly spooktacular selections!

Should we select a witchy themed screwball romantic comedy, like I Married a Witch (1942, dir. René Clair), or perhaps a black comedy horror musical, like Little Shop of Horrors (1986, dir. Frank Oz)? It then dawned on us that we have yet to review a classic ‘Universal Monsters’ horror flick. Naturally, we must start at the very beginning, with the 1931 pre-code horror film, Dracula, directed by Tod Browning and starring Bela Lugosi in his iconic role as the titular Count Dracula. This film adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel also just happens to have turned 90 this year, having been originally released in February of 1931, thus making it the perfect time to revisit this highly regarded horror classic!

Whether this is the first time you have seen Dracula, or the hundredth, we hope that you will join us in celebrating all things classic horror this month! So, grab some popcorn, or your favorite Halloween themed snack, and, in the words of the Count: “Listen to them. Children of the night. What music they make…”

How does Dracula hold up after 90 years? Is this film still one of the best mystery-horror films out there? Give it a watch, and then check back in with us at the end of the month for our discussion and thoughts on all things Dracula! Happy Spooky Season Y’all!!!
