March Film Club Pick: A League of Their Own

March Film Club Pick: A League of Their Own

“There’s no crying in baseball!” Well, if Jimmy Dugan were around for the 2022 MLB season, he’d probably amend this slogan just a tad. Regardless of the current state of the game, March remains a great time to celebrate the wonder that is baseball. March also happens to be Women’s History Month, and we at The Film Rewind love to celebrate women at any opportunity, especially in film. We can’t think of a better film to celebrate Women’s History Month than A League of Their Own (1992, dir. Penny Marshall), a female-directed film about an all-female baseball league, featuring a stellar cast of female actors (including Rosie O’Donnell, who celebrates her 60th birthday this month). The stars all aligned for this Film Club pick. It’s too perfect to pass up!

A League of Their Own tells the true story of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, which was founded due to the lack of male baseball players during World War II. The film specifically follows the Rockford Peaches, managed by the unwilling Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks). Featuring powerhouse performances by the likes of Geena Davis, Madonna, and Lori Petty, the film is also a showcase of some of the most talented female creators in the film industry in the early ‘90s, including director Penny Marshall.

What are you waiting for? Dust off your cleats and baseball skirts (?!), brush up on your hand signals, and catch up with A League of Their Own this month! If you don't already have your own copy of the film you can stream it for free on the Peacock app.

What do you think of our film club pick this month? What other films will you be watching in observance of Women's History Month? Share your thoughts in the comments below, and, as always, check back soon for more posts!
